STOPPING THE SPREAD, SURPPORTING THE INFECTED AND AFFECTED

Text Box: Youth Peer Education Training
The youth arm of the ECWA AIDS Ministry came up because we realized youth are special group of people that need special attention.  Often the have inadequate and inaccurate information.  Youth need unbiased Counselling services and accurate information about reproductive health, HIV/AIDS and sexuality.  The skills that youth need to survive in today’s society are not adequately taught. Therefore TEAM has developed a curriculum on Reproductive Health, HIV/AIDS and Life Skills.
In an evaluation of TEAM’s trainings in churches, it was found that the needs of young people are not adequately met.  This may be as a result of the cultural barrier that separates parent from discussing sexual issues with their children.  This makes it necessary for TEAM to provide a means where adequate and efficient services can be provided for young people.
Strategy
Youth peer education has been employed as the first strategy to reach young people with adequate and accurate information.  This is with the aim of stimulating informed decision making.  The second strategy is providing youth friendly HIV related services.
Objectives
The ultimate goal of the youth arm of the ministry is to promote sexual purity among young people.  The specific objectives are: To reduce the rate of HIV new infection. To equip young people with adequate life skills. To help young people make informed choices.  To help them to be imitators of Christ, who can influence their generation and the one to come.
Actions Taken:
1.       Trainings of Peer educators are conducted at the District Youth Councils of ECWA (DYC) and ECWA Secondary Schools.  In both cases the trainings are stepped down.
2.      Mentoring Trainings: Older people from various churches in a District Church Council (DCC) are trained to live a model life style that will be attractive to young people and therefore serve as mentors.
3.      Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) services are provided at youth conferences, Youth Fellowships and in other youth gatherings.
4.       Production of youth friendly materials.
All of these actions are taken toward building the capacity of the youth leaders to facilitate behaviours change.
