STOPPING THE SPREAD, SURPPORTING THE INFECTED AND AFFECTED

Text Box: Support Groups Good Counselling services have been provided at the Spring of Life Counselling Center for a number of years.  But TEAM saw the need for a close fellowship among HIV clients.  So a support group was born.  At the support group physical, emotional and spiritual problem are easily shared and solutions found.  The support group began with only 2 members but has now grown to 370 members (Jos).  Another support group started in Kwoi, (Kaduna) with over 200 members. Other groups are coming up in various ECWA Churches. The two support groups meet on monthly basis.  The meeting has proven successful in providing comfort and support in various ways.  The enabling environment provided by TEAM for clients to relax without molestation, stigma and discrimination has promote disclosure and reduce self stigma. The presence of these support groups has helped facilitate the formation of other groups by various other HIV/AIDS organizations in Nigeria.  Since TEAM pioneered in the area of support group many organizations have visited our support group to gain ideas on how to form their own. A typical support group meeting consists of songs, Bible teaching, health tips, games, sharing experience in small groups, praying for one another, welcoming new members etc. End of year party are usually organized outside their usual meeting environment. The Antiretroviral Drugs currently available have improved the health of our support group members.  So it has become more important than ever that support groups need to be strong in other to emphasize positive living as a way of combating new infections.
