STOPPING THE SPREAD, SURPPORTING THE INFECTED AND AFFECTED

Text Box: Nursing Care
Our team of nurses at Spring of Life helps to care for men, women and children who are living with HIV/AIDS. When clients present with symptoms, we give medicine like antibiotics, malaria treatment, and pain medicine and skins ointments. For those who are not experiencing symptoms of the virus, we teach prevention of HIV related infections and how to stay healthy. We work closely with women and children in prevention of mother to child transmission by giving free infant formula. We also give away grains for children in great need, and teach proper feeding techniques.
We do home based care for clients in critical condition, and assess their need to come to the hospital. We work with families and teach them basic hygiene, nutrition and end of life care, which better equips them to care for their loved ones at home.
Last year a new program started at ECWA Evangel Hospital called “The President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief”, or PEPFAR. This program was initiated by the U.S Government to bring free treatment to people living with HIV/AIDS. Our Home-based care staff at Spring of Life joined hands with EEH to teach and train community health workers to facilitate proper follow up care for people taking anti-retroviral drugs.
The health care workers are broken into treatment support specialists, those that work directly with the patients in the hospital as they start the drugs, and the adherence counselors, who follow-up the clients at home to endure proper adherence to therapy. At Spring of Life, we train these workers in Home-based care, including managing any problems or symptoms that clients may have during the course of treatment.
In order to effectively help manage side effects, the adherence counselors have been given Home-Based care kits as they go out on home visits. The kits contain items such as basic medicine, latex gloves, and salt-sugar solution for dehydration. These are given for emergency situations or until the client can get to the hospital. These kits help bring comfort and increase the quality of life of our clients.
