STOPPING THE SPREAD, SURPPORTING THE INFECTED AND AFFECTED

Text Box: Paediatric ARVs In 2004, with the medical supervision of consultant pediatrician, Dr. Mike Blyth, the nursing staff at Spring of Life started treating HIV positive children with anti-retroviral (ARV) drugs. They cooperated with Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) for CD4 test to monitor the effect of the drugs. Purchase of the ARV drugs was only possible through the gifts of sponsors. By the end of 2005 there were 30 HIV positive children receiving ARV treatment at Spring of Life. Many more children were being treated for opportunistic infections. The ministry was delighted when staff from the President’s Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief viewed the work at Spring of Life and decided to provide free ARV drugs for adults and children, and provide the support services to monitor the patients. At this point the focus of the work moved to ECWA Evangel Hospital. Today many more children and adults are receiving free ARV drugs at Evangel hospital. The ECWA AIDS Ministry, through Spring of Life and its nursing staff, continue to give medical advice, some drugs for opportunistic infections, and on going support for children and adults receiving ARV treatment. Through voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) services, Spring of Life staffs are often the first point of contact for those living with HIV and AIDS to get connected to the medical help they need.
